Today Lithuania celebrates Defenders of Freedom Day.
On the night from January 12 to 13, in 1991 Soviet military troops tried to take over Vilnius TV tower. TV tower was one of the objects protected by peaceful, unarmed, civilian people, who just gathered to stand near strategic buildings like the Parlament, the Press House, the Radio and Television Committee building, etc. with hope not to let Soviet military in. All this was done due to Moscow's demands of restoration of the constitution of the USSR in Lithuania, as Lithuania
declared independence from the Soviet Union on March 11, 1990.
As Lithuania refused to rejoin Soviet Union military troops were sent to biggest Lithuania cities.
On the night of January 13th Soviet tanks and soldiers encircle the TV tower. Soldiers fire live ammunition overhead and into civilian crowds gathered around the building. Tanks drive straight through lines of people. Of people who did nothing but stand, sing and say: Go home, now this is independent country, with independent television and press.
13 people were killed on the attack, one more died from a heart attack (at age 35) and 702 injured.
Two people died from being crashed by tanks, 11 were shot. One girl, two 17 year old boys, 10 man.
It is a tragic day, but also very joyful. Because we proved our statement to be free, independent and proved our love to our country. And also that proud and faithful person is stronger than armed and disrespectful one. That song is stroner than tank.
For few years now a lead called "Don't forget" is organized. It invites to wear a bloom of forget-me-not on your chest as a sign of memory and respect. This year in LadyPopular Lithuania "Forbes club" decided to join this lead virtually too :) So now we invite you to see how it looked ^^
